In a direct shear test, cohesion (c) and the angle of internal friction (φ) are determined to assess a soil's shear strength. Cohesion represents the resistance to shear stress due to inter-particle forces, while the angle of friction reflects the frictional resistance between particles at their contact points. These parameters are crucial for various geotechnical engineering applications, including slope stability analysis, foundation design, and retaining wall design

Soil in road construction usually refers to the natural ground layer on which the road is built. This layer is called the subgrade. 
Strength – Ability to support loads without excessive deformation.
Stability – Resistance to moisture and weather changes.
Compaction – Soil must be compacted to increase density and load-bearing capacity.
Drainage – Good drainage prevents weakening of the soil.

The impact test is a laboratory procedure used to determine the toughness and resistance of materials, such as aggregates or metals, to sudden impact loads. In civil engineering, the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) test assesses the strength of aggregates by subjecting them to repeated impact in a standardized testing machine. The results help evaluate their suitability for road construction and other structural applications.

The fineness of cement is measured as specific surface. Specific surface is expressed as the total surface area in square meters of all the cement particles in one kilogram of cement. The higher the specific surface is, the finer cement will be.
